After an unexpectedly nice flight on United - no lines at the ticket
counter, and a 3/4 full flight that for some reason didn't have
that usual United feeling that someone is going to come unglued
at any time and punch a flight attendant, we took an Air France
bus to the Arc de Triomph and rode off to the Montmartre district
in search of a hotel. We found a small quiet hotel on a pedestrian
only alley called Andre' Gill near the foot of the hill where the
church of Sacre Coeur stands.
We walked up to the church and joined half of Paris, including every
foreigner in town, to listen to the choir. Easter is a big deal in
France, and the Monday after is a National holiday. Since we arrived
on a holiday, the streets were very quiet which made riding to the
hotel very pleasant.
Today we went riding on one of the few bike paths in the city, and
stopped at a outdoor market where we bought picnic fare - fresh bread,
creamy cheeses, delicious apples, and red wine for our lunch.
Since we arrived, we have been trying to figure out why the Parisians
have such a bad reputation. We have probably interacted with at least
20 people, and they have all been very friendly and helpful. Maybe
it is because we aren't going to the expensive restaurants with snooty
waiters.
